Why are hydrants flushed, to me it looks like you’re being wasteful?

Hydrants are flushed semi-annually for a couple of reasons.  The first reason is to check that the hydrant operates properly in the event it is needed to fight a fire.  The second reason is to flush the system and remove sediment from the pipes and valves.
